Although William's primary occupation was as a "Waterman" on the Hull docks, he and his wife Emma made an additional income by running a boarding house. This fact has been passed down the generations in tha family, ant it is confirmed by the censuses. The family had boarders at the 1891 and 1901 censuses (at least). It is possible, not unlikely, that Emil and Mary Jane met under such circumstances. Him as a fisherman at the boarding house, and her, the landlord's daughter. I have however no evidence to support such a theory.

Yrke:
Worked his whole life at the water side of Hull docks. In 1871 he is a "Waterman", in 1881 he is still a waterman, but now he is also described as a lodging house keeper. In 1891 there is no longer any reference to the lodging house and his occupation is described as a "Lighterman" on the barges.
